HOLD EMOTION

This design originated from a fortuitous personal experience. It was my first time going to a traditional cemetery in China, Xiaoxiang Cemetery, one of the three most well-known in Changsha. The site is characterized by a mountainous landscape facing the Xiangjiang River, an auspicious geographical orientation. Two large mountains dominate the cemetery, densely covered with small monuments standing in neat rows along the slopes.
After walking through the site and viewing countless monuments, I found myself at the foot of the mountain, feeling unsettled, as if something remained incomplete. My mind was filled with thoughts and emotions, and I felt an urgent need for a space where I could sit, reflect, and find inner peace. However, there was no such place available. That realization inspired me to design one.
In this proposal, I use variations in height to define spatial hierarchy and evoke a sacred atmosphere. The contrast between exposed concrete and steel against the warmth of wood creates a dialogue between strength and softness, austerity and comfort. Ultimately, this design aims to offer visitors a place to release their sorrow and negative emotions, and to leave with a sense of serenity and peace.
